I think it's something 'Cowboy'. Not super sure. I'd have to check with Jack, James or Sharka. Also, 'huck smack' is actually 'chuck smack'. Sorry about misinforming you about that one.

Where to climb? - Duncan Boulders

by rock_climbr on Wednesday, July 02, 2008

Hey guys, I am plannning on making a trip or two up to the Duncan Boulders in the next couple of weeks and I was wondering if there was anyone who could give me some more beta on getting there and finding the boulders. If it would be easier just to meet someone up there to get some beta then I should be up there a week from saturday (10th or 11th I think). -Scott

New Routes - New Route at Mount MacDonald

by siriusgeek on Sunday, June 22, 2008

Vampire in the Sun 5.10a sport Dave LePard, Travis Munch Bolted line to the left of Little Mac Crack, dozen quick draws, 60m rope. Take care on the easier low angle stuff as there is some ground fall potential. Can be top roped but you will have to rap from the bolts at the top of the cliff to the bolted station below, approx 30ft.

General Talk - Climbing photog needs guinea pigs:)

by blackbird on Friday, June 20, 2008

Hey folks, I'm slowly getting into climbing photography, and after a couple of dry runs I'm looking for some climbers in the Victoria area to take photos of in action. It'll be the first outdoor attempt:) Is anyone heading to Fleming beach, or someplace even closer to Central Saanich this Sunday? I'm staying in Central Saanich, and have a bike as transport, so my geographic range is somewhat limited. Got my fingers crossed though! Hopefully there're at least 2 of you, which would free me up from belaying so I can take pics... Let me know, Cheers! Petra

General Talk - climbing Accident?

by ericgoodwin on Thursday, June 19, 2008

The incident has been reported in the local paper now. The accident happened Friday evening and was caused by some rock fall. The injured climber, Dave Shull (an Esquimalt local), was wearing a helmet but got knocked unconscious and fell 60 feet. He was doing some trad climbing with his nephew Blake. Langford’s technical rescue team were called and we able to get Dave of the cliff with some help from Mark Freeborn who was one of the first people on the scene. The injuries have been reported as a broken jaw, fractured skull, collapsed lung and a broken rib. As on Monday his vital signs look good and there is no sign of brain hemorrhaging. It's always awful to hear about accidents and I hope that Dave can make a speed recovery.

General Talk - Pete's route.

by stew on Tuesday, June 17, 2008

A good friend of mine and my regular climbing partner called me last week and said he needed some elevation and wanted to come to the island so is said come over and get some! I always have a great time when i go up Mt.Arrowsmith so i suggested that we climb Pete's route. I recently did Rudy's route and had a fun time so i thought more on the south summit would be great. I love that i can leave my house at 6:00 am and be hiking by 7:30am! The route is a fun but loose for most of it. The whole south summit seems to be like this but the atmosphere climbing this gully and the chimney at the top was a lot of fun! The face at the top of the chimney is actually fairly solid but the pro is spaced and you have to look for it but it is not very difficult. All and all i think Pete's route is a great day out and is good for someone like me who is a rock climber wanting to move into the mountains. As the the island guide book points out there does look like potential for more routes and harder routes on that part on the mountain. If any one knows if there have been more routes put up on the south summit since the guide was put out i would be interested in hearing about it.

New Site Design and Features

by ericgoodwin on Thursday, May 01, 2008 | 0 comments

I've been working on the island climbing site for the past year or so off and on and have decided to deploy the new changes. A couple things will be missing for a little while but should be back soon. The main thing is everyones pictures and comments on news articles.

We have some cool new features though including some great google maps integration. You can now pick your 'homebase' and the site is then customized from that city or town from then on, letting you know how far things are away from you. You can change this homebase at any time by clicking on the change link under the island climbing logo. For quite a few of the areas, there will also be directions on how to drive to the area. To check out the new directions feature, have a look at one of the gyms in the gym section.

I also added some good support for area admins, something that I was working on in the last site but never finished well enough to deploy it. I'll be adding people as area admins soon.

Hopefully people like the new site and find it easy to use. I'll be adding in more crag info soon.
