The incident has been reported in the local paper now. The accident happened Friday evening and was caused by some rock fall. The injured climber, Dave Shull (an Esquimalt local), was wearing a helmet but got knocked unconscious and fell 60 feet. He was doing some trad climbing with his nephew Blake. Langford’s technical rescue team were called and we able to get Dave of the cliff with some help from Mark Freeborn who was one of the first people on the scene. The injuries have been reported as a broken jaw, fractured skull, collapsed lung and a broken rib. As on Monday his vital signs look good and there is no sign of brain hemorrhaging. It's always awful to hear about accidents and I hope that Dave can make a speed recovery.

haynesal 1 post Hey guys, I'm the climber that got injured in the accident at Sugarloaf a few weeks ago. Was leading the short 10a when some rock blew before the first bolt. The single bolt belay anchor held but I took about a 25 foot header over the belay ledge and wrecked my meniscus (cartiledge in my knee) probably on the belay ledge on the way down. I hit my head but was wearing a helmet and my belayer lost control of the life line when she got thrown but we were using a grigri and it held. Chalk one up to helmets and grigris.... A stick-clip will definitely be the next addition to my rack, but it'll have to wait until after the surgery.
john 104 posts I've never been to the sugarloaf, but it sounds like your were on the 2nd pitch or a high walk to ledge because you fell past the belayer. So a fall factor 2 ? thats not so good. Stick clips are always good. I just use a tree branch. Maybe the route setter should have cleaned the route better or put the first bolt lower.
jro 10 posts Wow. Thanks for the post- its alway nice to get an accurate read on things- must learn from others. I hope your knee surgery gets things fixed up. I think you must have been on "fair warning" just right of the 5.8 Electric Donut? Thats not a fun little gully you fell into- lots of loose crap. Helmets indeed! Glad to see more people wearing them. All the best to you, and thanks again for the update.
